Transition Program ManagementOverview
In 2014, Westmead Millennium Institute (now Westmead Institute for Medical Research – WIMR) moved from its home at the Westmead Hospital to a dedicated state of the art facility on the Westmead Health campus. The transition from utilising shared facilities to becoming fully independent and responsible for the successful management of a nine level, $100m research centre was complex and presented a range of challenges WIMR had never encountered before. Castle Consulting was appointed to manage all aspects of the transition ranging from the development of a facility user manual, an FM and operations model, maintenance model, potable water management framework, DLP management, outsourcing program management, establishing an in-house catering and hospitality offer, and a science faculty and operations team coordination model.
Approach
The WIMR operates in a unique environment, even for a Medical Research Institute, comprising twelve independent Centres, each with separate funding and distinct operating requirements and scientific imperatives. For all projects at WIMR, establishing a clear understanding of the protocols, operational drivers and governance requirements for the stakeholder groups is essential. At Castle Consulting, we have fostered a culture of collaboration with all the scientific and facility operations teams and introduced a framework that guides all parties towards a model of efficient coordination and effective operational delivery.
Benefits
Our work has led us to develop operating models across facility and asset management as well as complex scientific and medical facilities such as Physical Containment Laboratories, Human Application Laboratories, CCSD centres and Sleep Research Laboratories. We have assisted in obtaining accreditation at the highest levels, as well as introducing programs and managing projects that have created tremendous efficiency and delivered $100k’s in savings. The original concept behind the design and delivery of a multi-centre research facility that engenders and encourages collaboration has become a reality.
